THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE PROBLEM!

Most of us are not actually aware of what it is we are thinking in regards to the problem. How we think about something will determine if it will become a problem or not. It can become a huge problem, a tiny problem or no problem at all!

The action we move into is based on how we feel because how we actually feel about the problem, is coming straight from the thought that we have about it.

Interpretation is everything and that is a choice we make.

How often do you stop and notice what it is you are thinking about in respect to your problem? Do you ask yourself if this is really how you want to feel about the problem? Is the feeling you have, helping you to take the action necessary to resolve the problem?

A simple technique is to look closer at the “problem” and extract what are the actual facts vs how much is made up of the meaning you have given to it.

Unhelpful thought example

Fact: the project manager didn’t ask you to take the lead on a particular initiative.

Meaning: the project manager doesn’t see you as capable and is not open to giving you opportunities.

Problem: I have a project manager who doesn’t want me to succeed

Holding the thought, that the project manager doesn’t want you to succeed could make you feel; useless, not respected, frustrated or even angry. Feeling these feelings turns your focus inwardly and you give control over to the external environment. Whilst being in this state you are in a negative space. Actions which emerge from such states, usually are unproductive and keep you only focused on the problem.

Helping thought example

Fact: the project manager didn’t ask you to take the lead on a particular initiative.

Meaning: the project manager doesn’t think I’m ready to have that level of responsibility

Problem: I need to build evidence to show that I can take on that level of responsibility

Holding the thought you need to build evidence to show you want to have that level of responsibility could make you feel; motivated, engaged, determined. Feeling these feeling has you outwardly focused and you take ownership. Whilst being in this state you are in a positive curious space. Actions that emerge from such states, usually are productive and solution-focused.

“You can’t change anyone but you can change yourself”

I want to invite you to really look at the thoughts your having about on some recent problems you have encountered and examine how you are thinking about it now. Decide to feel different about it because you are going to change the way you think about it now. I also invite you to look at your future and what thoughts you are having about it. Get excited and start changing how you see problems. You have total control over how you think, that is your power and when you really start to put that into practice, how you experience life will change forever.
