What is NLP

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. It is the practice of understanding how people organize their thinking, feeling, language and behaviour to produce the results they do. It is like learning the language of your own mind!

Neuro -As individuals, we have established our own unique filtering system to process the enormous amount of data we absorb through our senses. Our first mental map of the world is created from internal images, sounds, internal sensations, tangible awareness, tastes and smells that form as a result of the neurological filtering process. This is the first layer of our mental map.

Linguistic -The information being received from the outside world we want to give meaning to and so we assign a language to these internal images, sounds, feelings, tastes, and smells, which form our everyday conscious awareness. This is the second layer of our mental map.

Programming - Our behavioural response is then determined as a result of both mental maps.


It’s like when you go on a holiday to a foreign country, try to communicate with someone who doesn’t speak your language and you're not sure if they understand you. For example, you go out for a meal in a restaurant and believe you've ordered a chicken dish but when the waiter brings you your food, it turns out to be fish!  


Well, the relationship we have with our unconscious mind can be quite similar. Our unconscious mind works on beliefs systems, our beliefs are like road signs in our mind and tell us which direction to go. So, if you believe you are “ordering”; to be happy, to be confident, to be healthy, to be promoted, to start that new business, etc. but what is showing up in your life is something different, it's because the road sign in your mind is different to the one you are trying to order. Why?

Because the conscious and the unconscious mind each have their own function, your conscious mind is setting up your goal and your unconscious mind is your goal-getter. When your language between them is not aligned, your unconscious mind will follow your road sign, the belief you actually hold, not the wish you want to have.

  • the conscious mind - (setting goal) I want to get promoted   
  • the unconscious mind (belief) - I am not good enough (to be promoted)
  • Shows up: no promotion

When you want to walk a new road, then your road sign needs to be updated and replaced.
